LET THE BUYER BEWARE: DVD Warning of the Week, 11-26-05

With the Christmas holiday season upon us, I feel it is my duty to warn stoner comedy fans against the Half-Baked Fully Baked Edition DVD. While I like the movie and bought the DVD, the extras are anything short of insulting to the fan base that has arisen since this movie came out nearly eight years ago.
For some reason the DVD has a smoking and non-smoking part on the menu. However, both versions are the same or seemed the same to me, so it doesn't matter which one you take.
Director Tamra Davis gives commentary, but Dave Chapelle who co-wrote the movie and has two roles, one in the lead as Thurgood Jenkins and the other as Sir Smoka Lot, is MIA. There is no behind the scene feature.
The only good thing about the DVD is the alternate ending, which is Thurgood talking more with the joint at the Brooklyn Bridge. Also, no more than five seconds after walking in the sunset with Mary Jane (Rachel True) they fight and breakup. The alternate ending has Thurgood jumping over the bridge to retrieve his joint.
The deleted scenes are funny, but don't add anything new to the movie. After Thurgood, Brian (Jim Bruer) and Scarface (Guillermo Diaz) break into Frankensense and Burr to steal the marijuana, their bikes are stolen by kids. In the movie, the bikes are gone when they come outside and are arrested by the police.
There is also a funny deleted scene in which we meet the acquaintance seller, who coerces Brian to roll up a joint after he's just bought it.
Another deleted scene has Bob Saget as the cocaine addict breaking into a car to steal a nice briefcase.
There is also a cartoon animated section in which we are introduce to other pot smokers, such as the paranoid smoker and the adventure smoker. However, this is a relatively short special feature.
The worst part of this DVD is the special feature in which the grandmother is baking in the kitchen. It is totally awful, because someone at Universal thought it would be funny to see a relatively younger woman playing an older woman getting stoned as she bakes in the kitchen. It's not funny. Nothing that involves the elderly acting hip is ever funny.
Another speical feature has an actor who is definitely not Steven Wright, asleep on the couch for five minutes. This isn't funny either.
But still, if you're not a fan of the speical features and you still like Half-Baked, then you would like this DVD.
Yet, you've been warned.
