About ten years ago, Saturday Night Live did a fake commerical in which robots attacked elderly people. It had Sam Waterston as the paid endorser who gave a dry speech about the dangers of robots. The Patriot Act has seemed a lot like that comedy sketch. Today, the U.S. Senate, showing they have more common sense than we give them credit for, was unable to renew it.
And the Axis of Evil of Bush, Gonzales, and Frist are pissed.
As usual Bill Frist, who is the Senate Majority Leader for reasons that explain how Michael Brown became head of FEMA, said that the senators are putting America in danger for not renewing the Act. America is one big motherfucker of a country. When is it not in danger?! I know what they are going to say, that since the Patriot Act was been in effect, there have been no other terrorist attacks. Just like we haven't been attacked by robots.
The only thing the Patriot Act has done is make things tougher on people like my brother, who is aptly named John Thomas, as well as many other people with similar names. With all due respect to our national security, but I'm not frightened by Yusuf Islam, formerly known as Cat Stevens.
With all this money, we have spent to make America safer, we have actually turned America into nothing more than an upper-class gated community and the Patriot Act has been that stupid Homeowner's Agreement/Block Charter thing.
Well, I hate gated communities.
Even worse, I hate hearing about the war on terror and how we are constantly in danger while at the same time we are safer.
What really pisses me off is that the residents of Oklahoma voted for a 50 cent tax on their sale phones for improved 911 assistance. Ironically, one of the voting precints near where I lived has no cell phone range. That's right. People were voting to get better 911 service on their cell phones in an area where there is no service.
I mention this for two reason. One, why not use some of that Homeland Security money to provide better 911 service on cell phones. Two, there will come a time when people will need to use 911 in an area where there is no service at all, so the tax is rather useless in that case.
Just like the Patriot Act is useless. Thousands of people die or gun fire alone in this country. To say this Act is making America safer is just a load of horse shit.
Frist doesn't need to make us fear terrorists, because there are always going to be terrorists out there. I don't see the federal government doing much to get rid of neo-Nazis and the Ku Klux Klan anymore in this country.
Fifty years from now, the Patriot Act will be one of those silly things we briefly mention in our social studies classes. At the most, it will be an essay question.
